Abstract

Corrosion-resistant articles are produced by coating a metallic body, e.g. a sheet, conduit or tank or other container with polyvinyl chloride bonded thereto by a substituted or unsubstituted polyvinyl-pyridine. The polyvinyl chloride may be applied as a solution, in particulate form, or as a pre-formed sheet, and may contain plasticisers such as dioctyl phthalate, dioctyl sebacate, or tricresyl phosphate. Preferred polyvinyl-pyridines are polymers of 2-vinyl-pyridine, 5 - ethyl - 2 - vinyl - pyridine, and 2 - methyl - 5 - vinyl - pyridine, which may be applied in solution in a volatile organic solvent, by spraying or spreading. The coatings may be applied to steel and aluminium surfaces. The polyvinyl chloride coating may contain pigments, and may be heated after application to form a continuous lining. In examples: (7) preformed sheets of polyvinyl chloride secured as above to aluminium sheets are embossed by engraved rolls; (8) a polyvinyl chloride composition containing a green pigment is mixed with a similar composition containing a yellow pigment, and the mixture spread on an aluminium sheet bearing a polyvinyl-pyridine layer; (9) a steel sheet is coated with polyvinyl-pyridine followed by a plasticised polyvinyl chloride mix, and a layer of small glass beads is then applied, and the sheet finally heated to gel the resin, a reflecting surface being thus obtained.
