Abstract

Metal or concrete surfaces are coated firstly with a mixture of hydraulic cement and a latex or emulsion of a film-forming natural or synthetic thermoplastic organic material with or without a finely divided aggregate, then with a continuous adherent layer of a film-forming thermoplastic material which is compatible with the film-forming material in the first coating, and finally with a layer of polyvinyl chloride plasticized with an organic polysulphide rubber. The final layer may be in the form of a so-called reverse-phase paint. The thermoplastic material may be polyvinyl chloride, natural rubber, synthetic rubber such as butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer or polysulphide rubber, polyvinyl acetate or mixtures thereof. A preferred composition uses polyvinyl acetate emulsion, "Ciment Fondu" (Registered Trade Mark) and sand for the first coating, and polyvinyl acetate containing up to 20% of a plasticizer for the second. The first layer may be applied as a trowelling composition, and the subsequent layers by brushing or spraying. The method may be used for repairing corroded steel tanks by applying the coatings to the corroded parts; or for coating the interiors of concrete storage tanks.ALSO:Metal or concrete surfaces are coated firstly with a mixture of hydraulic cement and a latex or emulsion of a film-forming natural or synthetic thermoplastic organic material with with or without a finely divided aggregate, then with a continuous adherent layer of a film-forming thermoplastic material which is compatible with the film-forming material in the first coating, and finally with a layer of polyvinyl chloride plasticized with an organic polysulphide rubber. The thermoplastic substance may be polyvinyl chloride, natural rubber, synthetic rubber such as butadieneacrylonitrile copolymer or polysulphide rubber, polyvinyl acetate or mixtures thereof. A preferred composition uses polyvinyl acetate emulsion, "Ciment Fondu" (Registered Trade Mark) and sand for the first coating, and polyvinyl acetate containing up to 20% of a plasticizer for the second.
