Abstract

The invention comprises 2-ethyl-2-sec-butyl-1 : 3-propanediol dicarbamate and its preparation by reacting 2-ethyl-2-sec-butyl-1 : 3-propanediol with phosgene to form the corresponding dichlorocarbonate and converting this to the dicarbamate by ammoniation. Preferably an acid-binding agent such as sodium hydroxide, 1 : 5-dimethyl-2-phenyl-3-pyrazolone, or a dialkylaniline is added in the first stage of this process. Either anhydrous or aqueous ammonia may be used to form the dicarbamate. Examples describe the preparation of 2-ethyl-2-sec-butyl-1 : 3-propanediol by reduction of diethyl ethyl-sec-butyl-malonate with lithium aluminium hydride and conversion of the diol to the dicarbamate by the process of the invention.ALSO:A pharmaceutical preparation having sleep-producing properties comprises 2-ethyl-2-sec.-butyl-1 : 3-propanediol dicarbamate formed into pills, tablets or capsules or dissolved in a solvent such as a mixture of water and polyethylene glycol.
