Abstract
The invention comprises 2-methyl-2-sec.-butyl - 1 : 3 - propanediol di - carbamate, which is used therapeutically as a hypnotic. The above compound may be prepared by reacting 2-methyl - 2 - sec. - butyl - 1 : 3 - propanediol with phosgene to form the di-chlorocarbonate followed by treatment with anhydrous or aqueous ammonia to form the di-carbamate, or by subjecting the diol to ester interchange with a low molecular weight urethane. In an example 2 - methyl - 2 - sec. - butyl - 1 : 3 - propanediol is heated with ethyl urethane in toluene in the presence of aluminium isopropoxide to give 2-methyl-2-sec.-butyl-1 : 3-propanediol di-carbamate. 2 - Methyl - 2 - sec. - butyl - 1 : 3 - propanediol used as a starting material is produced by reducing the corresponding disubstituted malonic ester, for example by lithium aluminium hydride.ALSO:Sleep-inducing therapeutic compositions comprise 2-methyl-2-sec.-butyl-1 : 3-propanediol dicarbamate, which may be formed into pills, tablets or capsules for oral administration or dissolved in a solvent such as a mixture of polyethylene glycol and water to give a solution suitable for injection or for use as an enema.
