Abstract

The invention comprises 2-methyl-2-(1-ethylpropyl)-1:3-propanediol dicarbamate and 2-ethyl-2-(1-ethylpropyl)-1:3-propanediol dicarbamate. They may be prepared by reacting the free diol with either (1) phosgene and then ammonia; or (2) a low molecular weight urethane; or (3) cyanic acid in an anhydrous medium. Examples are given. 2-Methyl-2-(1-ethylpropyl)-1:3-propanediol is prepared by lithium aluminium hydride reduction of diethyl (methyl-1-ethylpropyl)-malonate, itself prepared from diethyl methyl-malonate and 3-bromopentane. 2-Ethyl-2-(1-ethylpropyl)-1:3-propanediol and diethyl (ethyl-1-ethylpropyl)-malonate are prepared similarly.ALSO:Pharmaceutical compositions contain, as essential active ingredient, either 2-methyl-2-(1-ethylpropyl)-1 : 3-propanediol dicarbamate or 2 - ethyl - 2 - (1 - ethylpropyl) - 1 : 3 - propanediol dicarbamate. They may be formulated as pills, tablets, capsules or solutions for oral administration.
