Abstract

The invention comprises 2-phenyl-1 : 3-propanediol dicarbamate and its preparation by reacting 2-phenyl-1 : 3-propanediol with phosgene to form the corresponding di-chlorocarbonate and converting this to the dicarbamate by ammoniation. Preferably, an acid-binding agent such as sodium hydroxide, 1 : 5 - dimethyl - 2 - phenyl - 3 - pyrazolone or a dialkylaniline is added in the first stage of this process. Either anhydrous or aqueous ammonia may be used to form the dicarbamate. Examples describe the preparation of 2-phenyl-1 : 3-propanediol by reduction of diethyl phenyl malonate with lithium aluminium hydride and conversion of the diol to the dicarbamate by the process of the invention.ALSO:A pharmaceutical preparation possessing anti-convulsant activity comprises 2-phenyl-1 : 3-propanediol dicarbamate formed into pills, tablets or capsules or dissolved in a solvent such as a mixture of water and polyethylene glycol.
