Abstract

The invention comprises 2-cyclopentyl-2-methyl-1 : 3-propanedio dicarbamate of the formula:- <FORM:0930430/IV(a)/1> and the preparation thereof by reacting 2-cyclopentyl-2-methyl-1 : 3-propanediol with an alkali metal isocyanate in the presence of a mineral acid. 2-Cyclopentyl-2-methyl-1 : 3-propanediol is prepared by lithium aluminium hydride reduction of diethyl-a -cyclopentyl-a -methyl-malonate. Diethyl-a -cyclopentyl-a -methyl-malonate is prepared by reacting the sodium salt of diethyl-a -methylamalonate with cyclopentyl bromide. 2-Cyclopentyl-2-methyl-1 : 3-propanediol dicarbonate of the above general formula is used in conjunction with solid or liquid pharmaceutical excipients as a tranquilliser and a muscle relaxer. The compositions may take the form of tablets, dragees, capsules, suspensions, solutions and emulsions, and are suitable for enteral (oral) or parenteral administration.
