Abstract

Plant material from Buxus sempervirens is macerated with alcohol, the undissolved material separated, the clarified solution is concentrated and made alkaline and then extracted with a water-immiscible solvent to yield an extract containing a principle active against tuberculosis. The extract may be dried and concentrated in vacuo to yield the anti-t.b. factor, which may be compounded with a solid or liquid pharmaceutical carrier. If desired the initial treatment with alcohol may be carried out with alcohol containing 0.5 to 1 per cent of any organic or mineral acid. The compositions may be administered orally as tablets, powders or capsules, parenterally in sterile solution, or as ointments or jellies. Example N describes a syrupy solution for oral administration comprising the anti-t.b. factor, sucrose, citric acid, alcohol, glycerin, sodium benzoate, coloring, flavouring and a wetting agent.
