Abstract

The invention comprises dicarbamates of the formula <FORM:0873908/IV (b)/1> (wherein X is an ethyl, n-propyl, iso-propyl, n-butyl, iso-butyl or allyl radical) and their preparation by reacting a monocarbamate of the formula <FORM:0873908/IV (b)/2> (wherein Z is a hydrogen atom or X) with, when Z is hydrogen, an isocyanate XNCO or phosgene followed by an amine NH2X, or with, when Z is X, cyanic acid, a urethane or phosgene followed by ammonia. Examples are given, and the muscle relaxing activity of the products is compared with that of other dicarbamates of the formula <FORM:0873908/IV (b)/3> (wherein R is variously methyl or ethyl, R1 is variously ethyl or n-propyl, X is variously hydrogen, methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, iso-propyl, n-butyl, iso-butyl, iso-amyl, allyl or benzyl, Y is variously hydrogen, methyl or ethyl, X1 is variously hydrogen, methyl or ethyl and Y1 is variously hydrogen or ethyl. Monocarbamates, of the second formula above, are prepared (1) by reaction of 2-methyl-2-n-propyl-1,3-propane diol with diethyl carbonate to give 5-methyl-5-n-propyl-m-dioxanone and then treatment of this with ammonia or the amine NH2X; or (2) by the controlled action of phosgene on the diol followed by reaction with ammonia or the amine NH2X. Specification 751,841 is referred to.ALSO:Pharmaceutical compositions contain, as essential active ingredient, a dicarbamate of the formula <FORM:0873908/VI/1> (wherein X is an ethyl, n-propyl, iso-propyl, n-butyl, iso-butyl or allyl radial). They may take the form of pills, tablets, capsules or solutions. Specification 751,841 is referred to.
