Abstract
2 - Methyl - 2 - n - propyl - 1:3 - propanedioldicarbamate, which is the active ingredient in a muscle-relaxant composition, is prepared by reacting a solution of 2-methyl-2-n-propyl-1:3-propanediol in acetone, with liquid phosgene at a temperature between -5 DEG and 0 DEG C. A cooled thirty per cent solution of sodium hydroxide is added, and the mixture cooled to between -15 DEG and -5 DEG C., prior to the addition of cooled aqueous ammonium hydroxide solution and the rising of the temperature to 20 DEG C. The sodium hydroxide may be replaced by 1-phenyl-2:3-dimethyl-5-pyrazolone, dialkylaniline or similar acid-combining compounds, and the ammonium hydroxide by anhydrous ammonia.ALSO:A muscle relaxant composition comprises, as its active ingredient, 2-methyl-2-n-propyl-1, 3-propane-diol-dicarbamate, which may be present in amount 0,04 to 2,0 gram. The active ingredient may be intermixed in a dry state with gelatin, starch, magnesium stearate and alginic acid to form pills, tablets or capsules, or may be dissolved in an injectable solution such as propylene glycol or alcohol. The preparation of the dicarbamate is described, (see Group IV(b)).
