Abstract

798,136. Opening cans by tearing. CONTINENTAL CAN CO., Inc. May 18, 1956 [July 6, 1955], No. 15632/56. Class 66. [Also in Group XXII] A body blank for a can structure is formed with a tear strip 10, Fig. 3, by feeding the blank in the direction of its length through scoring roll means to define the tear strip 10 by score lines 9 and then through embossing and flattening roll means to simultaneously form ribs 16, 17, 18 along the tear strip and flatten out waves created during the scoring action. The intermediate rib 16 projects inwardly and the other two ribs 17, 18 project outwardly, of the blank. The rib formation terminates short of the ends of the body blank but the score lines 9 extend from one edge to a tongue extension at the other edge. The finished can has an internal collar 11, Fig. 1, curled inwardly at its upper end 12 and anchored as at 13 in an outwardly directed bead 14 in the can body. The collar 11 is in contact with the inwardly projected rib 16.
