Capsule closures; stoppers, screw.-A closure for bottles &c. comprises a top G, Fig. 1, carrying a packing-disc 5 and secured to a marginal flange H, Fig. 2, the lower portion of which is scored at 8 to form a detachable strip 9 spun beneath a shoulder 1 on the bottle to secure the closure thereto. The junction 3 of the top G and the flange H lies beyond the circumference of the bottle mouth and forms an upwardly extending rib 4 to which pressure is applied to force the closure on to the bottle against the resilience of the top G. The flange H is formed from a plain or ornamented metal sheet having its ends 13, 16 between the top and the score 8 bent over to adapt them to engage with each other and constitute the seam 2 when the sheet is bent to form a cylinder, the lower portion 9 being formed with a tongue 10 separated from the upper portion by a slit 11 to prevent the strain of the removal of the strip from being too close to the seam 2. The seam may be strengthened at its lower end by providing the flange with a bead 36, Fig. 15, and, by locating the score 8 on the underside of the bead, any jagged edge left when the strip 9 is torn away is turned towards the bottle .and thereby rendered harmless. At the lower end of the seam, the bent-over ends may be pressed into close contact with each other to strengthen the joint but they make loose contact only and so permit the flange to expand slightly to adapt itself to a tapered neck. The finished closure is varnished all over to prevent rusting. When the strip 9 has been torn off by pulling the tongue 10, the device acts as a temporary closure. To adapt the closure to screw-threaded bottles, threads may be moulded in the flange H.
