[Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv).] Joints.-The pyramidal tapered tops of cans or like sheet-metal containers are produced by forming channels 3, 4 for seams at the edges of the tapered flap portions 1 in the flat-blank and engaging or interlocking them during or after the folding of the body portion of the blank. In the can shown in Fig. 4, alternate flaps are provided along both edges with simple bends 4 adapted to engage double U-section bends 3 formed on the adjacent flaps; in Fig. 8 each flap is formed with one bend or channel 3 and one single bend 4. The steps comprise the stamping out of the blanks, the formation of the bends and channels, the formation of the strengthening bead 5 and the bending over of the flaps, and the setting up of the body portion on a mandrel and the interengagement of the bends and channels. The interlocked channels are pressed and may be soldered. An alternative form of channel suitable for seams not to be soldered is shown in Fig. 10.
