Abstract
703,703. Making hollow-ware. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Feb. 12, 1952 [Feb. 12, 1951], No. 3398/51. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). [Also in Group XVII] Bending; seaming sheet metal.-In a method of making a seamed sheet metal box from a blank bent to U shape to form a base 5, Fig. 3, and sides 3, 4 and having double folds 2a, 2b on its ends engaged by folds 7a ... c, Fig. 6, on a pair of end forming blanks 6, the seam 9, Fig. 8, is bevelled, preferably at an angle of 15 degrees to the box ends. The top edge 10 may be beaded or burred over and a closure may be aplied such as that described in Specification 703,558, [Group XVII]. The first blank is bent up from a flat blank, Fig. 2, which is first flanged at the edges to form the double folds 2a, 2b and then bent to U shape on the fold lines 3b, 4b. The corner portions 1 are belled or crimped to allow for spreading during bending. The end blanks 6, Fig. 6, are formed by bending flat blanks in two stages, the first forming the flanges 7a ... c, Fig. 5, at right-angles to the blank. A portion 8 of the metal is cut away at the corners where a junction between two folds occurs.
