Abstract

747,325. Making hollow-ware. EXLAM SOC. ANON. June 24, 1954 [June 29, 1953; Sept. 9, 1953], No. 18550/54. Class 83 (2). [Also in Group XVII] A metal container having a circumferential fold in its shell defining a smooth edge for reclosing after opening is made by forming in a cupped blank an inwardly directed channel 5, as by rolling, by cutting two score lines 8 and 9 on the inside above the channel, making a slit extending between and perpendicular to the score lines, outwardly bending an edge 12 of the slit, passing a tear tag through the slit and spot welding it to the inside of the blank, sealing the slit with a plastic sealing material and pressing sides of the channel to the form shown in Fig. 9 so that the top 23 of the fold extends above the score line 9. The bottom 2 of the blank is then cut off and the container bottom 27 and top 29 are secured by seamed joints 26, 25. In a modification a single score line is made and a rip wire is included in the outer portion of the folded channel.
