Abstract

1,190,284. Making caps. E. C. FRAZE. 22 Nov., 1967 [5 Dec., 1966], No. 53147/67. Heading B3A. [Also in Division B8] A cap for an open top container is made by a procedure that is characterized by the use of a rib 28 to protect a line of scoring 20, 22 and 24 during the operation of dishing and flanging the cap. The first step is to produce the scoring lines 20, 22, 24 and 39; the second step is to punch out a circular blank 47 and form an arcuate rib 28. These steps may be carried out in one punch press operation. The central area is then dished to form an annular sloping shoulder 38 along with short radial ribs 16 and to precurl the peripheral edge of the sheet to form a lip 18. The cap is then flanged to make it complete except for a pull tab 30. A hollow rivet is made in the cap and a pull tab provided with an aperture to receive a hollow rivet 48. The pull tab is positioned with the rivet 48 extending through the aperture wherein the rivet is staked to form the configuration illustrated by numeral 32.
