Abstract

1434970 Ring-pull container closure AMERICAN CAN CO 17 Dec 1973 [27 March 1973] 58358/73 Heading B8T A ring-pull container closure assembly 20 comprises a thermoplastic lid 24 and metal overcap closure 22 which are secured together by the engagement of overcap tongues 38 in slot 41 of an upwardly protruding annular retaining bead 40 in the lid 24 in one embodiment wherein the overcap 22 is a retaining ring and the lid 24 has a peripheral flange 46. In another embodiment the lid 24 and overcap 22 are joined by engagement of a radially inwardly extending curl at the base of the overcap skirt 30 around the lower portion of the lid skirt. In the second embodiment the overcap 22 has a full central panel and the lid 24 has no horizontal flange 46 so that the curl can be accommodated. The lid and overcap skirts 54, 30 respectively are spaced radially from each other to enable the lid skirt 54 to bow outwardly as it passes over the container neck bead 70 when the assembly 20 is being placed on the container. The assembly 20 is removably secured to the container by seating and abuttingly engaging an undercut 64 with the bead 70 and by crimping the lower portion 32 of the overcap skirt 30 against a corresponding portion of the lid skirt 54. A pull-ring 43 is integral with cap rim 28 in the first embodiment so that on lifting and pulling the ring 43, tongues 38 will be removed from the engaged positions in slot 41. In the second embodiment the pull-ring is attached to a substantially triangular tear strip defined by score-lines, in the central panel.
