Abstract

1471672 Tear strip closure OWENSILLINOIS Inc 8 fuly 1974 [9 July 1973] 30097/74 Heading B8T A metal closure cap is produced from a blank 10 having a frangible line 11, the line being formed into two leg portions 11b, 11c connected by an arc 11a, leg portion 11b extending to the periphery of the blank and being discontinuous at a region 18, whilst leg portion 11c is turned back upon itself to produce the arcuate portion 11d. The outer region of the blank is formed into a depending skirt 17 which terminates in an annular bead 22, the bead being produced by the free edge of the skirt being turned outward as shown in Fig. 5, enclosing discontinuity 18 within it, the discontinuity lending the bead added strength. Removal of the cap is effected by means of force on a pull ring (14), Fig. 3 (not shown), connected to the tear strip by a rivet 15a, thus causing line 11 to rupture and the cap to be removed from the container mouth in one piece. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 7 (not shown), the bead is produced by the free edge of the skirt being turned inward.
