Abstract

1,116,759. Opening containers. CONTINENTAL CAN CO. Inc. 16 Dec., 1966 [11 March, 1966], No. 56487/66. Heading B8D. A removable portion 17 is torn from a can end by means of a sheet metal pull tab 21, shaped as shown, and apertured to receive a rivet 20 integral with the portion 17 of the can end. The tab 21 has a pair of spaced fulcrums 28 between which lies a panel 27 connecting a ring portion of the tab to the rivet 20. On raising the tab, it hinges along a line 36 before the fulcrums 28 come into play when the force thereby exerted tears the can end along a weakened line 18 which outlines the panel 17. The tab material is turned under at 32 to form a rim and a similar but opposed formation 33 defines an opening in the ring portion. Ribs 15, 23, 24 and (25), Fig. 3 (not shown), extend inwards; beads 22 are raised.
