Abstract

1,217,604. Opening containers. AMERICAN CAN CO. 14 May, 1968 [15 May, 1967], No. 22739/68. Heading B8D. A container end closure 10 made of metal comprises a peripheral wall surrounding a countersunk removable section 12 defined by a score line 14 and having fixed thereto an opening tab 15 which is used to tear the section 12 free from the end closure, there being on the section 12 a plurality of parallel beads 50-56 substantially perpendicular to the direction of pulling of the tab which prevent upward bowing of the removable section when the tab is pulled. The tab comprises a handle 25 with an upturned end 27, hem portions 29, and a front end portion 36 and is secured to the end closure by a rivet 16 formed integrally therewith. When the handle 25 is lifted upwardly, the front portion exerts a downward force on the removable section to tear a portion of the score. Rearward and continued upward pulling of the tab extends the tearing of the score in opposite directions from the place of original rupture and eventually results in the complete removal of the removable section from the end closure. The beads may project upwardly from the removable section and the tab may be welded thereto.
