Abstract

1284883 Opening containers AMERICAN CAN CO 13 Aug 1969 [14 Aug 1968] 40398/69 Heading B8D A metal can end 10 comprises a removable panel 30 defined by a peripheral score-line 28, a pull-tab 32 secured to a forward portion of the panel adjacent the score line by an integral panel rivet 34, and an upstanding reinforcing bead 80 in the rear portion of the panel so that, when the tab is raised to initiate rupture of the score line and then pulled rearwardly to detach said panel, the rear portion will remain substantially planar as said panel is detached from said can end. Inwardly depressed beads 50-53 prevent crowning of the panel, the stiffening effect of the depressed beads in the forward portion of the panel being counteracted by providing parallel inwardly-pressed beads 60- 63 which lie transverse to the direction of panel removal and merge to form a recess 68 facilitating access to the pull-tab ring 44. In modifications, the reinforcing bead 80 is replaced by a plurality of beads 180-186 lying parallel to the direction of panel removal, Fig. 6 (not shown), or by reinforcing depressions 280, 282 formed in the rear portion of the panel, Fig. 7 (not shown).
