Abstract

1,096,393. Opening containers. CONTINENTAL CAN CO. Inc. Feb. 2, 1966 [Feb. 19, 1965], No. 4623/66. Heading B8D. A can 10 provided with a removable end panel 16 defined by a score line 15 is opened by means of a pull tab 17 riveted to the panel 16, the tab body 19 having a C-shaped cut partially surrounding the rivet so that on pulling a tab handle, in the form of a ring 28, the tab body 19 pivots and forces a curved forward end 23 of the tab to rupture the score line 15. The ring 28 is itself hinged to the tab body 19 by means of an integral strap 32 weakened by a central aperture 33. The ring 28 has an offset portion 31 opposite the hinge enabling it to be raised. The tab body is either held by a rivet integral with the end panel 16 or is welded to the panel 16, and is strengthened by a peripheral rib 21 omitted at the end 23.
