Abstract

1,106,828. Opening containers. CONTINENTAL CAN CO. Inc. 16 Aug., 1966 [15 Oct., 1965], No. 36670/66. Heading B8D. A metal pull tab has a gripping portion with central aperture 33 surrounded by a reinforced edge 27, 34, and a nose 25 at its opposite end apertured to receive a rivet formed in a can end. U-shaped cuts 41 on either side of the nose 25 cause the tab to hinge along a line joining their inner ends as the tab is raised. Fulcrum surfaces 37 on the tab next engage the can end and transfer the lifting force on the tab to the rivet which is formed within a removable can end panel 20 defined by a score line 21. The panel is thereby torn out. In a modification, Fig. 10 (not shown), the cuts 41 are replaced by apertures (46) from which extend cut lines (47).
