Abstract

1,229,264. Opening containers. AMERICAN CAN CO. 6 Sept., 1968 [7 Sept., 1967], No. 42420/68. Heading B8D. A can end closure 10, e.g. of tin plate, or aluminium, comprises a flat central panel 12, having a tear ring 30 riveted at 31 within an ancillary scoreline 48, an annular inclined wall 22 bounded by a primary scoreline 28, an annular horizontal wall, a countersunk wall 26 and a can engaging flange 14. Within the ancillary scoreline 48 there is a raised reinforcing embossment 62 with a piercing nose 68. Pulling the tear ring 30 ruptures the ancillary scoreline 48 at 52 and further outward and upward pulling continues the rupturing to scorelnies 56 whereupon pivoting of the nose 68 effects the piercing of the primary scoreline 28. Opening of the can is completed by pulling the tear ring 30 back to the centre. The stresses formed when tearing the ancillary scoreline 48 are directed away from the primary scoreline 28 by scorelines 58, 60.
