Abstract

641,196. Making rip-seams. STOKKE, T. Dec. 31, 1947, No. 35088. Convention date, Nov. 18, 1941. [Class 83 (iv)] In roller seaming lids on tin cans 2 a tear-off strip 3 is formed on the edge of the lid beyond the folded over edge by compressing and hardening the strip with a flat portion 8 of the seaming roller which is backed by a mandrel 9. The junction of the hardened and unhardened parts of the seam forms a tearing line. The lid edge is also pressed by the roller into a locking groove 6 on the container from which it is loosened during tearing-off. A tearing lead-in tongue is provided on the edge of the lid.
