Abstract

1,262,272. Opening containers by tearing. COOKSON SHEET METAL DEVELOPMENTS Ltd. 6 Feb., 1969 [16 Feb., 1968; 24 Jan., 1969], Nos. 7698/68 and 4248/69. Headings B8D. [Also in Division B3] A weakened line is formed in a container end wall by pressing it between a top die 36 having a step 64 and a bottom die 40 having a step 66 offset inwardly of the step 64 so as to form a portion 24 of reduced thickness in the wall which may be easily ruptured to open the container. The top die is formed with a bead 47 which cooperates with a recess 60 in the bottom die to produce the bead 30 in the container wall which accepts the material extruded from the reduced portion 24. The formation of the bead 30 commences prior to the formation of the reduced portion 24. The portion 24 may be annular so as to define a tear out panel 26, and the top die has a recess 74 to accommodate ears 70 and a reinforcing bead 116 which are formed prior to the forming of the weakened portion 24. The ears are subsequently used to secure a handle 120 (Fig. 8) to the tear-out panel by being clenched on to tabs 78 which are hingedly connected to the handle which is formed with a nose 122 for puncturing a reduced portion 112 (corresponding to portion 24) on upward pivoting of the handle. Lifting the handle shears the remainder of the reduced portion 112 with minimum bending of the tear-out panel 106. A reinforced shoulder 110 may be formed at the periphery of the wall and forms a safe edge for the inside of the container when the panel 106 has been removed.
