Abstract
489,783. Joining side seams of can bodies. FARRER, J. O. (Continental Can Co., Inc.) Feb. 16, 1937, No. 4684. [Class 83 (iv)] Seamed joints; joining sheet metal by interengaging formatÝons.-A sheet-metal container body intended to have either or both ends flanged so as to secure a can end by double seaming and having a soldered side seam with lapping portions at the end, is provided with a mechanical lock in the lap portions disposed below the flanging line and wholly within the two thicknesses of metal forming the lapping portions so that flanging of the body and double seaming of the ends is not interfered with by the lock. A side seam for a container comprises hooked portions 2, 3 and lapping portions 4, 5 at the ends which are subsequently flanged to receive the closures. Tongues 6 formed in the portions 4 below the portion to be flanged engage slots 7 in the portions 5, offset portions 8 guiding the tongues 6 during the operation of expanding the body. The parts are finally deformed to produce the joint, Fig. 5, which is then soldered. According to the Provisional Specification, the side seam may be lapped throughout.
