Abstract

798,102. Carpet sweepers. BURRAGE & BOYDE, Ltd. Nov. 27, 1956 [Dec. 16, 1955], No. 36130/55. Class 138(1). [Also in Group XXVIII] A handle propelled carpet sweeper having a rotating brush 7, Fig. 2, in the front portion 6 of the body 1 is supported by a pair of coaxial wheels 3 located so as to allow the body 1 to rock about the wheel axle 2 and by a single rear roller 4 carried by a bifurcated bracket 11 pivoted on a transverse rod 12 secured to the underside of the body 1 below and in front of the axle 2 and provided with a torsion spring 13 one end of which bears against the top of one arm of the bracket 11 and the other against the body so as to urge the front portion 6 down against the carpet 25, Fig. 1, whereby the height of the brush 7 is automatically adjusted in accordance with the thickness of the carpet. The handle 5 is held in a socket 19 formed at the junction of bifurcated arms 20 which are pivoted near their ends to pins 21 carried by the bracket arms and round one of which is wound a spring 22 serving to press the bracket and hence the roller 4 lightly against the carpet. Downward movement of the handle is limited by abutment of arm ends 20a against axle bearings 2a and the handle is clamped in its upward storage position by a catch 23. Movement of the front portion 6 of the body 1 is limited by a bolt 14 projecting downwardly from the body through an aperture 15 in a portion 16 of the bracket 11. The brush 7 is driven from the wheels 3 by friction gearing.
