Abstract

773,073. Carpet sweepers. BISSELL CARPET SWEEPER CO. Jan. 18, 1954 [May 21, 1953], No. 1423/54. Class 138(1) A carpet sweeper casing comprises top and bottom members of generally pan shape having complementary telescopingly engaged front rear and end wall sections and being formed as integral units, the bottom member having a longitudinal brush opening in the bottom wall thereof,. the bottom member, at the rear of the opening constituting a dust pan and the casing has a dust pan discharge opening in its rear wall. As shown in Figs. 2 and 3 the top casing member 7 telescopes over the bottom casing member 8 and the joint between the members is covered by an elastic buffer strip 65. The portion of the bottom member 8 to to the right of a rotary brush 28 constitutes the dust pan and discharge opening therefor provided in the top wall 2 and rear wall 5 of the member 7 and also in the rear wall of the member 8. is closable by a door 15, Figs. 1 and 2. hinged at 17 to the member 7 under the urge of U-shaped springs 19. The brush 28 which projects through the longitudinal opening 13. Fig. 5, in the bottom member 8, is mounted in the member 8 on journals 31, Fig. 1, carried by spring support strips 32 secured to the member 8 at 34, the journals 31 passing through holes in the casing end members into bearing holes in the ends of the brush shaft 29, Fig. 3. The members 32 are covered by the buffer strip 65. A central pulley 36 on the brush shaft 29, Figs. 2 and 3, is frictionally engaged by floor wheels 37, 38 rotatably carried with a small amount of play under the urge of springs 53, 59, in a housing member 39 pivotally mounted at 42 within the casing and also within a slot 40, Fig. 5, in the bottom member 8. The housing 39 and thus the wheels 37, 38 may be adjusted vertically with respect to the casing 7. 8, and brush 28, by means of an eccentric pin 45, Figs. 2 and 3, operable by a knob 48. which pin engages in a slot in a bracket 43 fixed on the housing. Brush combs 62, 64 (of which the comb 64 is of the type described in Specification 702,426) are carried by a brush housing member 61 and a deflector member 63, both mounted on the bottom member 8. A spring bail 23, for a handle 22. Fig. 1. has its inturned ends journalled in pivot ears 24 carried by the casing end members. which ears have a pair of grooves 26, 27 disposed at right angles to one another. The pivotal connection of the bail is arranged forward of the centre of gravity of the sweeper so that when the sweeper is raised by the handle from the floor the casing will swing to the position shown in Fig. 1 and the bail will snap into the grooves 27. In this position the dust pan may be emptied, on opening the door 15, or the machine may be stored. The grooves 26 are provided so that the handle may be retained in a vertical position relative to the casing when desired. Further rear wheels 11 disposed in casing insets 10 are provided for supporting the casing on the floor. Specification 773,074 also is referred to.
