Abstract

528,871. Carpet sweepers. STEVENS, A. H. (Bissell Carpet Sweeper Co.). May 16, 1939, No. 14597. [Class 138 (i)] In a carpet sweeper having a brush opening along the bottom of its forward edge and a dust pan extending rearwardly of the brush opening the casing has at each side a brush and wheel supporting unit comprising a yoke with one arm longer than the other, a floor wheel mounted on an axle between the yoke arms and an idler wheel mounted so as to convey the motion of the floor wheel to the brush hub which is pivoted on the longer arm of the yoke. As shown a sweeper 1 has a brush opening along the bottom of its forward edge 3 and a removable dust pan 5 extending rearwardly of this opening on which is mounted a rear wheel 7. A wheel and brush supporting yoke 14 has longer and shorter arms between which a floor wheel 17 is mounted and is pivoted to the casing at 20 midway between the axle 18 of the floor wheel and the forward end of the longer arm on which the brush 11 is pivoted. An idler wheel 22 to convey the motion of the floor wheel to the hub 12 of the brush 11 is carried in a yoke 21 which is pivoted at 20 so as to be capable of vertical adjustment and is biassed in a downward direction by a spring 24. A plate 27 secured to the end of the casing carries a spring which with the yoke 14 tends to urge the floor wheel floorwards. When an operating handle 33 carried on a bail 32 is. pressed downwards the yoke will be rotated in a counter-clockwise direction and the brush forced downwards.
