Abstract

795,382. Combustion chambers; fuel injectors. RICARDO & CO., ENGINEERS (1927), Ltd. March 16, 1956 [March 22, 1955], No. 8370/55. Class 7(3) A combustion chamber D, Fig. 3, formed in the cylinder head and connected to the cylinder through a narrow, approximately tangential passage D<SP>1</SP> which produces a swish in the chamber D about a horizontal axis, is provided with an injection nozzle G, Fig. 4, with an outwardly opening spring-loaded injection valve J having an enlarged head J<SP>3</SP> situated in an enlarged diameter portion H<SP>3</SP> of the fuel injection passage and seating on a seat H<SP>4</SP> formed between the portion H<SP>3</SP> and a smaller diameter portion H<SP>2</SP> of the injection passage through which a portion J<SP>1</SP> of the valve stem extends freely. In Fig. 3, the upper part B of the combustion chamber is hemispherical and the lower part formed in a separate block C thermally insulated from the cylinder head comprises a cylindrical portion D<SP>2</SP> and conical portion D the passage D' opening into a flat surface forming the base of the chamber. The injection nozzle, Fig. 4, has a nozzle member H provided with an extension sleeve forming a guide for the valve stem J the upper end of which carries spring abutment members K, M, which co-operate with the end of sleeve H to limit the opening movement of the valve J. In a modification, the combustion chamber has a cylindrical middle section with conical portions at each side thereof. Specifications 431,345, 439,426 and 777,970 are referred to.
