Abstract

794,761. Pipe joints. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Oct. 26, 1956 [Nov. 2, 1955], No. 31288/55. Class 99(1). A coupling for a vacuum insulated pipe lines for conveying liquified gas comprises a spigot 1 and a socket 2 which contact only through a sealing ring 20, an annular space 22 between the members forming a pocket in which the liquid tends to boil and form an insulating gas seal. As shown, the spigot comprises tubes 5, 3 integral with the pipe line, the space 11 between the tubes being evacuated, and a tube 4 fitting in a hole 7 in a plate 6 on the end of the tube 3, the space between the tubes being closed by a plate 10. The socket comprises tubes 15, 13 integral with the pipe line, a plate 16 fixed to the end of the tube 13, and a tube 14 fitted in the plate 16 and in a plate 19 fixed to the end of the pipe 15. The joints between the end plates and the tubes are made gas tight by solder fillets. External heat conducted by the tubes 14, 4 preferably made of low conductivity material, e.g., stainless steel or nickel silver, causes a little of the liquid in the pipes 5, 15 to boil. The spigot 1 must lie above the socket to maintain the gas pocket so that the liquid is kept from the gas seal. The members 1, 2 are clamped together by toggle clips (not shown). The ring 20 fits in a recess 21 in the plate 16.
