Abstract
793,311. Stuffing-box substitutes. HENLEY'S TELEGRAPH WORKS CO., Ltd., W. T., FARRER, C. O., and PLEWS, C. March 23, 1956 [March 25, 1955], No. 8859/55. Class 122 (5). An adjustable gland comprises a body 15, a plurality of sealing members 22 in spaced angular relation, each radially movable in relation to the body in a guideway 20 formed therein, and means operable from outside the body to move the sealing members 22 simultaneously inwards or outwards.. The inner ends of the sealing members are shaped so that in their inner position they form a seal of small diameter, e.g. around the pull-wire 13 of a cable 11 undergoing vulcanization in a steam chamber 10, and in their outer position they form a seal around the cable itself as it is drawn through the aperture 24 in the body 15. The sealing members 22 are urged outwardly by springs 33 and inwardly by the rotation of an annulus 30 surrounding the body 15, on the inner face of which cam surfaces 35 control the radial movement through pins 36 on the stems 27 of the sealing members 22. The latter may be in two or more groups arranged in series, the radial axes of each group bisecting the angle between the axes of adjacent groups, to provide overlapping seals. Such seals may be employed both at entry and exit ends of the steam chamber. Adjustment of the seals, to increase or decrease the working diameter, may be manually or automatically effected. For automatic adjustment a tell-tale 38 on the pullwire may be employed in a relay-operated circuit to start a motor arranged to move the operating annulus in the required manner.
