In an oscillating vane type hydraulic motor resilient 0-section packings 14, 15, 17, 18, 21 and 22 are used to seal the gaps between the stator and the rotor 12 and its vanes 10, 11. At each point where a seal is made the packings are arranged in pairs with a space between them, thus creating a chamber 23. Working fluid from the side of the vane which has the higher pressure on it passes a non-return valve 28 or 29 and reaches chambers 23 via the narrow passages 24 suffering a slight pressure reduction due to the throttling effect in the passages. At the extreme positions of the vane the stem 31 or 32 contacts the stator and opens the valve in the low-pressure side of the vane, thus relieving the pressure in the working chamber. By varying either the diameter of the passages 24 leading to the end faces of the rotor or the distance between the packings 21 and 22 on the end faces of the rotor, differential end thrusts may be achieved to counter-balance external axial loading of the rotor shaft.
