Abstract
743,510. Rotary engines. SMALLBONE, H. P. Oct. 20, 1954 [Aug. 11, 1953], No. 22114/53. Class 110(2) A rotary internal combustion engine comprising a cylindrical rotor 6 which is centrally mounted in a substantially elliptical working chamber and provided with at least one pair of radial vanes 17, 18 disposed approximately 45 degrees apart incorporates means for preventing outward radial movement of one vane during one continuous half of each rotation of the rotcr together with means for preventing like movement of the other vanes during the other half of each rotation. The vanes 17, 18 are provided with notches adapted to co-act with ribs 19, 20 of different radii formed on the end covers; the arrangement being such that the members 17, 18 engage the working chamber when their notches engage the ribs 20, 19 respectively. The members 17, 18 are flush with the periphery of the rotor when their notches engage the ribs 19, 20 respectively. The vanes are loaded by springs or fluid pressure as are the sealing pads 13 disposed between the inlet and outlet conduits 9, 11. The capacity of the recesses 22 formed in the rotor can be adjusted by a spring- loaded piston 24 which is controlled by a rack and pinion mechanism, or a servo, acting on a spindle 25 (see Fig. 2, not shown).
