922,121. Rotary pumps and motors. PRATT PRECISION HYDRAULICS Ltd. Nov. 3, 1960 [Oct. 6, 1959; Feb. 18, 1960], Nos. 33832/59 and 5767/60. Class 110 (2). A rotary hydraulic pump or motor comprises a four-lobed rotor 19 inside a cylindrical space in a stator, and three outwardly sliding spring- loaded vanes 16 set in the stator and bearing on the rotor. The rotor is profiled so that there is a uniform flow of working fluid, and, to reduce wear, the outward acceleration of the vanes is less than the subsequent deceleration and the inward acceleration is greater than the subsequent deceleration. These two conditions are achieved by profiling the rotor so that when 1 1 1 0<#< -then d=4ns#<SP>2</SP> and when - <#< - 2n 2n 2 then d=s - 4ns/n-1 (1/2 - #)<SP>2</SP>, where n is the number of vanes, that is, three in the embodiment shown; # is the angle between one extremity of the lobe and the position at which the adjacent vane contacts the rotor, expressed as a proportion of the lobular pitch 2n/n+1; d is the length of vane protruding from the stator casing and s is the total vane stroke. The springs 17 are covered by caps 18 to facilitate their removal. The components of the pump or motor may be bolted together as in Fig. 6 (not shown) to facilitate removal of parts. The vanes or their rotor-contacting portions may be of synthetic plastic material, and the rotor may be drilled to allow fluid to leak from the bearings to the low pressure side.
