Abstract

790,122. Spindle drives. BOYD, Ltd., J. & T., and BOYD, H. A. Jan. 30, 1956 [Feb. 16, 1955], No, 4639/55. Class 120(2) A textile spinning or twisting machine of the type including a snakelike belt extending the length of the machine frame and adapted to drive the spindles or flyers, a whorl associated therewith with each spindle or flyer and movable against the belt to transmit the drive to the associated spindle or flyer and a second whorl associated with each spindle or flyer and mounted adjacent to the face of the belt remote from the first whorl so as to be movable to disengage the belt from the associated spindle or flyer and to maintain the belt out of engagement therewith, has the first and second whorls mounted on a swing lever which is engageable by a bell crank lever acted upon by a further lever biased so as to urge the first whorl into engagement with the belt. In the arrangement shown twisting spindles 2 are each rotatable about a fixed axis on a rail 1 and 3 denotes a snake like belt which engages the spindles. Associated with each spindle is a swing lever 5 pivoted at 5<SP>1</SP> to rail 1 and carrying a first whorl 4 and a second whorl 6. A compression spring 12 is interposed between lever 5 and rail 1 and is adapted normally to urge lever 5 and whorl 4 to a position clear of belt 3 such that the belt is disengaged from the associated spindle 2. A bellcrank lever 7 pivoted at 7<SP>1</SP> is provided for holding the lever 5 in a position such that whorl 4 presses belt 3 against the whorl of spindle 2. This lever 7 is connected via a link 8 to a gravity influenced lever 10 which is held up in the operative position by a notch 10<SP>3</SP>, engaging with a further notch 11<SP>1</SP>, on a further lever 11. When the two notches are disengaged the lever 10 falls and removes the arm 7<SP>2</SP> of the lever 7 from the lever 5 thus permitting spring 12 to urge the whorl 6 to engage the belt 3 to disengage it from the whorl of spindle 2 and to engage a brake 9 with said whorl.
