753,585. Spindle driving and stopping mechanism. ARUNDEL, COULTHARD & CO., Ltd. Oct. 7, 1954 [Oct. 8, 1953], No. 27646/53. Class 120 (2). In a yarn doubling &c. machine of the type in which each spindle unit is mounted in a swivelling arm which is moved in one direction to press the spindle wharve against its driving belt and in the opposite direction to withdraw the spindle from the belt and bring it into engagement with a brake, each spindle unit can be moved by a pedal operated part and a transmission cable or the like to a fixed position with its wharve in engagement with its driving belt so that the pressure between the wharve and the belt has a predetermined value, the spindle unit being held in such position by a trip latch of an automatic knock-off mechanism which releases the latch when an end breaks, the pedal and associated parts being returned by spring pressure to a position in which the spindle unit can move clear of the driving belt and against the brake. As shown, the spindle a is mounted on a swing bracket b in the usual manner. The spindle wharve h is held in contact with the driving belt i by means of a wire k fastened at one end to pin n on the bracket b and passing over a pulley m and fastened at the other end to a bracket j. Also on the bracket j is a vertical wedge-shaped cam member o which can cooperate with a lug-like part on the bracket b to move the spindle wharve away from the belt i and into contact with the brake pad g. The bracket j is connected with the usual automatic stop motion mechanism comprising a rod q to the upper end of which is fitted a latch block r with which engages a latch s on the stop motion device t comprising the usual drop wires or the like. The latch s maintains the bracket j in the operative position but should the yarn fail the latch s is moved clear of the block v and the bracket j moved upwards under the action of spring w, the cam member o causing the wharve h to be moved away from the belt i and into engagement with the brake pad g. A treadle on the rod u is provided to reset the mechanism.
