Abstract

784,352. Inlet or exhaust manifolds. AKT.-GES. FUR UNTERNEHMUNGER DER EISEN - UND STAHLINDUSTRIE. July 1, 1955 July 3, 1954], No. 19131/55. Class 7(2) In a multi-cylinder engine 'having an inlet and/or an exhaust manifold 18, Fig. 1, connected to the cylinder by individual pipes 17, the distance between the junctions with the manifold of at least two pipes 17 differ from the distance between the centre lines of the associated cylinders by more than the minimum distance between the centre lines of two adjoining cylinders. In a modification, the pipes from adjacent cylinders 1, 2 and 6, 7 cross over each other before entering the manifold as shown, the remaining pipes being straight. In another modification, the engine has six cylinders and the pipes from cylinders 5, 6 cross over each other whilst those from cylinders 3; 4, are straight. In a further modification, the pipes from cylinders 1, 3 cross over each other and are additionally crossed by a straight pipe from cylinder 2. In a final modification, the pipes from cylinders 1, 2 and 4, 5, Fig. 5, cross over each other whilst cylinders 1, 3 and 4, 6 have common junctions with the manifold; more than two pipes may merge into a common junction with the manifold.
