Apparatus suitable for cleaning the air intake of an i.e. engine comprises a preliminary cyclone separator 4 having a dust-laden air inlet 7, a deflector plate 5, a dust discharge slot 14 and a central partially cleaned air outlet duct 13, and an inward flow radially pleated filter body 3 held between a circular plate 17 and an annular plate 18 within a two-part housing 2, 20 connected to the outlet duct 13 by a cone-shaped disc 8 having apertures 15; cleaned air being drawn through a duct 22 clamped to the engine manifold.
