Abstract

193,132. O'Neill, W. L. Nov. 15, 1921. Dust-collectors.-An air cleaner for use with an internal-combustion engine comprises a centrifugal or other dust-separating chamber through which the intake air passes, and an ejector operated by the engine exhaust or otherwise by the engine. Fig. 1 shows a separator comprising a casing into which dusty air enters bv the space between convolute plates 4, 5, the circular movement thus obtained giving a centrifugal effect. The purified air passes away through perforations 8 in an off-take pipe 1, the dustier portion being led through perforations 9, 19 to a box 11 formed with a nozzle opening at the throat of an ejector tube 13 which constitutes the outlet of the exhaust pipe 23 of an internal-combustion engine. In modifications, a pressure or suction blower may produce the inducing current of the ejector. Fig. VIII shows apparatus comprising a separating chamber formed of cylindrical and conical portions 12, 14. 16 and furnished with a dust outlet portion 30, 32, 34, the mouth of the cone 34 opening at the throat of an ejector tube 40. A cylindro-conical baffle 22, 24 almost closes the outlet portion 16 of the separator, and is furnished with a lip formed with outlet apertures 28. The air inlet is formed by distance and guides plates 54 disposed in pairs tangentially at the circumferences of an upper flange 42 on the separator casing and of a cover plate 46 which carries the pure air outlet 50. A screen 62 for large particles surrounds the annular series of inlet passages formed by the plates 54.
