Abstract

783,235. Hatch - &c. covers. SANDEN, J. O. Nov. 29, 1955, No. 34133/55. Class 20(1) [Also in Group XXXIII] A rain-protecting fabric cover 1 especially for a ships hatch is provided with a slot 4 to accommodate the rope depending from a cargo trimming crane, so that when the crane rope is swung sideways to press on one or other side of the slot it actuates a switch for an electric motor 9 to unroll the cover at one end and roll it up at the other end, so that the slot 4 moves with the sideways movement of the crane rope. The cover is in two separate parts both edged by a bow like frame 13, 15, 16, spaced apart to form the slot 4, the bows being supported at one end only on a carriage 14 with wheels 17 running on the top and underside of rails 18. The carriage (and thereby the slot) is traversed sideways by an endless chain 19 pulled by sprockets 20 driven by the motor 9. The motor 9 also rotates the rollers 2 and 3 on which the cover is rolled up at one end and unrolled at the other end whereby the slot 4 is traversed to the . required position. The slot is edged with light ropes 10 and 11 so that e.g. when the crane rope is swung sideways it bears on 10 or 11 operating a switch 23, Fig. 5, whereby the motor rotates in the required directions to move the slot 4 as above. The slot 4 diverges at 27 to facilitate entry of the crane rope. In a simpler form, Fig. 6, the slot 4 is moved by hand or electric power by rotating winding and underwinding drums 33 carrying ropes 32 and counterweights 31. The slot in this case comprises masked tongues of fabric 37. The whole fabric may be transparent. In Fig. 8, the slot 4 is kept at a width equal to the diameter of the crane rope 44 by a 4-armed fastener 38. The slot edges of the cover fabric have U-section pieces 41 and 42 attached, the piece 42, Fig. 10. carrying pins 43 which are held distanced from the other edge of the slot by a flange 40 on the arms 38. The crane rope 44 in traversing the slot 4 presses aside one arm 38 to allow the rope to pass, whereupon the succeeding arm 38 rotates into position to hold the slot 4 at the required width.
