A hatch cover for use on ships comprises a coaming 4, cover sections 6 to 10 movable from a closed position on the coaming to an upended stowed position at one end of and clear of the coaming, a pivot and support roller 27 on each side of each section 6 to 10 and disposed at or adjacent the point of balance of each section, a single stowing guide 19 being disposed at each side of the stowing end and inclined upwardly from the vicinity of the end of the coaming to co-operate with the pivot and support rollers so that as the sections move over the end of the coaming their leading ends descend to upend the sections about their points of balance and thereafter the pivot and support rollers move along the stowing guides to the stowing position where the guides are shaped to permit the upended sections to remain supported thereon by their rollers 27. Each section 6 to 10 is also provided with a further roller 26 on each side which co-operates with the roller 27 to provide a controlled movement of each section as it is upended about the tipping roller 18a and also co-operates with the ledge of a U-shaped guide 18 during movement along the coaming. Each section 6 to 10 also has a roller 25 at the front of each side co-operating with the guide 18 for movement along the coaming and the section 10 a roller 28 at the rear of each side, the sections 6 to 9 being supported at the rear on the front of the adjacent section. The sections 6 to 10 are joined by chains 11 and are moved by a rope 15 connected to a winch. Locking and cover tightening devices are provided. Protective sheets 24 may be provided to prevent lateral tilting of the sections.
