Class 103(4) [Also in Group XXXIII] A cover for a hatch of a railway vehicle comprises a series of panels, e.g. 11-16, which may be corrugated, interconnected, e.g. by chains and provided with supporting rollers 37, the panel 16 having additional supporting rollers 36, and tipping rollers 38, to enable the panels to be stowed vertically at the end of the hatch. The hatch is closed by exerting a pull on the chain 41 attached to the end panel 16 which moves from the stowage place 5, the tipping roller 38 moving along and down the ramp 8, 9, while stowing rollers 60 which may be provided on the shafts of the supporting rollers 37 are constrained to move up the ramps 4, 10. The movement continues until the panel takes up a horizontal position, the supporting rollers 37 engaging a runway 3. Continuing the pull the remaining panels are moved in a similar manner until their leading edges engage with the adjacent panels as shown in Fig. 11 and supported at their rear ends by rollers 37. Thrust rollers 30 are mounted as shown except on panel 11, and longitudinal runways provided on the panels terminating in a ramp 32. Sealing strips, e.g. 26 may be arranged at the ends of the hatch opening and locking bars 55 may be supplied to engage notch members 57 on the panel. The actuation mechanism may comprise an endless chain 41 secured to the end panel 16 passing around sprockets 42 at each end of the hatchway with a suitable arrangement for hand operation.
