Abstract

940,168. Aircraft doors. VICKERS-ARMSTRONGS (AIRCRAFT) Ltd., and R. C. GOODWIN. July 10, 1962 [July 19, 1961], No. 26231/61. Heading B7W. [Also in Division E2] A door 10 has, on each side, a roller 13, Fig. 1, to engage a track 12 on each side of an airframe opening whereby the door can be moved down until rollers 21 on each side of the door engage in channels 22 of a carrier 23 which pivots about 24 to fully open the door. Inadvertent lowering of the door is prevented by rollers 13 entering recesses 14 in the airframe. A track 15 on each side of the door engages a roller 16 on the airframe during opening to prevent outward displacement of the bottom of the door. Sideways displacement of the door is prevented by rollers 17 and tracks 14 on the door co-operating with tracks 18 and rollers 20 on the aircraft, respectively. When the door is open a platform 25 on the carrier 23 is in a horizontal position and a shield 26 protects the upper door edge. Members 40, Fig. 3, pivoted one on each side of carrier 23, are spring biased to engage spigots 42 on the airframe to secure the door open; a retractable support 44 may additionally secure the door. A door counterbalance has two spring devices, each comprising a spring 47 coiled on a drum 46 and fixed at one end to a drum 48 which carries a spool 50 for a cable 49 which passes over pulley 54 on channel 22 and is attached to the door. As the door opens, cable 49 is withdrawn from spool 50 and spring 47 is wound on to drum 48. In the closed position, lugs 52, 53 which form the tracks 12, 15, 18 abut to prevent outward movement of the door when a cabin is pressurized ; a sealing stop 51 on the door is inflatable. A retractable handle 31 projects bolts 28, 29 into holes in the airframe.
