Class 20(3) In a window assembly two sashes 5, 6 are mounted in a frame 1-4, the sash 6 being provided on its upper and lower rails with rollers 8 for sliding horizontally in rectilinear grooves 7 in the frame cross members 3, 4 as shown, or alternatively being mounted as a conventional pivotal sash with hinges on the frame upright 2, and the sash 5 being provided with upper and lower carriages 14, 15 so that it can be opened either by sliding horizontally behind the sash 6, or by pivoting inwards about the frame upright 1. The lower rail of the sash 5 is supported at one end by a roller 20 mounted on the lower carriage 15 and at the other end by a second roller 22 housed in a carriage 23, the bearing surface for the rollers on the frame rail 3 preferably being covered, e.g. with metal, or plastic. The sash 5 is guided in grooves 9 at one end by spindles 16, 18 carried respectively by the carriages 14, 15 and adjacent the other end by the ends of a rod 24 which is also used to fasten the sash 5 in the closed position, the upper and lower ends of the rod 24 being retractable from fastening holes in the frame members 3, 4, by means of a handle 25. Each groove 9 comprises a main portion which is parallel to the corresponding groove 7 and a curved portion 10 which is preferably formed in a metal plate 11 and is extended by a second arcuate portion 13 concentric with an associated pivot pin 12. In order to'slide open the sash 5, the ends of the rod 24 are first retracted by operating the handle 25 so that the sash can be-pivoted slightly and the ends of the rod 24 can be protracted into the grooves 9, thereafter by pulling the handle sideways the sash 5 can be moved laterally behind the sash 6 Curved recesses 17, 19 provided respectively in the outer ends of the carriages 14, 15 co-operate, when the sash' is' against the upright 1. with the pivot pins 12 on the metal plates 11 one of which is let into each cross member 3, 4 adjacent the upright 1.
