Abstract

782,498. Arc-rupturing in switches. ALLISCHALMERS MANUFACTURING CO. Jan. 24, 1955, No. 7797/56. Divided out of 782,497. Class 38 (5). In a circuit-breaker having an arc chute with spaced insulating barrier plates 46, arc constricting members are provided in the spaces between adjacent barrier plates. The members may be formed as integral projections 56 on the surfaces of the barrier plates and provide constricted arc passages 61 between the plates which extend as fins from the side walls 44, 45 of the shoot. The projections 56 may converge from adjacent the arc receiving end 58 of the arc shoot to lines 60 and then extend parallel to the surfaces of the plates to flanges 62. As an arc rises in the arc shoot it is folded in a horizontal plane around the free edges of the plates and then constricted in the passages 61 between the plates. In addition, the arc may be folded in vertical planes around the flanges 62. Various modifications are shown in which the projections converge to the flanges, Fig. 5 (not shown), converge to the flanges and then diverge towards the exhaust end of the arc shoot, Figs, 8 to 11 (not shown), and are arranged as tongues which provide small traps for the arc products, Figs. 18, 19 (not shown).
