In an arc-chute having insulating plates 10 ... 15 with slots Fr, Fl extending alternately on either side of a centre line C, C<SP>1</SP> conducting plates 11a, 13a, 15a are inserted in alternate spaces between the insulating plates so that the arc is divided into parallel sections in which the current flows in the same direction with the result that electrodynamic forces expand the arc sections into loops as indicated at a2, Fig. 1C.
