Class 123(3) In a water-tube steam boiler having a multistage superheater 3, 4, 5 located in a gas duct 6 between the boiler proper and an economizer (not shown), a by-pass duct or ducts 11 with a damper or dampers 10 is arranged alongside one or more of the superheater stages, say the first and second 3, 4, and main dampers 7, 8 are disposed behind one of the said by-passed stages in the direction of flow of the combustion gases. The arrangement is such that the combustion gases will by-pass the superheater stages alongside the duct or ducts 11 when the main dampers 7, 8 are closed and the bypass damper or dampers 10 are open. All the dampers extend in a direction transversely to the superheater elements, and the elements of adjacent stages may be connected by a joint comprising an apertured bar 13 to opposite sides of which the elements of the two stages, respectively, are individually connected.
