780,148. Generating combustion products under pressure. HEIZMOTOREN GES. Nov. 15, 1955 [Nov. 15, 1954], No. 32652/55. Class 51 (1). An oscillating-column combustion apparatus comprises a mixing tube having fuel and air inlets which opens tangentially into an at least partly cylindrical combustion chamber, and an open exhaust tube connected axially to the cylindrical part of the combustion chamber and forming therewith an acoustic resonator. The mixture enters the combustion chamber 1, Fig. 2, through a tangential inlet tube 5. Ignition is effected at 7 by means of a sparking-plug, glowing wire, or an externally-heated depression. The exhaust tube 2 is connected to a conical portion 3 of the combustion chamber 1. An inner jacket 8, of heat-resistant metal, may be provided. An exhaust tube 2 and conical portion 3 may be provided at each end of the combustion chamber, the tubes being tuned to the same frequency but not necessarily having the same cross-section; the tubes may be curved so that their ends lie parallel to one another. The combustion chamber may comprise a part 10, Figs. 5 and 6, followed by a part 11 of smaller diameter which is connected to the exhaust tube 12. The inlet tube 20 has its axis arranged parallel to that of the combustion chamber, but opens tangentially into the combustion chamber through a slot 21.
